Enrolling your child in Katy ISD: a new-family walkthrough

2026-09-30 6 min read By Carol Jukes, Broker/Owner

Katy ISD registers new students entirely online through its PowerSchool Enrollment system, and registration for the 2026-27 school year opened July 24, 2026. This guide covers the address lookup that starts the whole process, the documents you will upload, and the mistakes new families make most often.

If you are moving to Cinco Ranch with school-age kids, the short version is this: Katy ISD registers new students entirely online through its PowerSchool Enrollment system, and registration for the 2026-27 school year opened on July 24, 2026. The whole process starts with one address lookup, because the school your child attends depends on the exact home you buy, not on the name "Cinco Ranch." This walkthrough covers what to gather, where to upload it, and the steps new families get wrong most often.

Everything below comes from Katy ISD's own registration pages and announcements, accessed September 30, 2026. The district reviews and modifies attendance boundaries every year, so treat this guide as the process, and always verify the assignment for the specific address before you make an offer.

Step one: look up the school for your address

Katy ISD assigns every residential address to an elementary, junior high, and high school based on its land use zone. The official lookup is the district's SARA application, School Assignment by Residential Address, reachable from the "Find My School" page on katyisd.org. You enter a street address and it returns the three assigned campuses. Because Cinco Ranch spans multiple feeder patterns, two homes a few streets apart can sit in different zones, so the lookup is the only reliable answer.

Step two: gather the documents

Katy ISD's registration pages list the documents every new student needs. Most are standard, but two details trip up new families: the proof of residence must be dated within the past 30 days, and if you register with a lease or purchase contract, a utility bill in your name is due within 30 days of moving in.

  • Proof of residence dated within the past 30 days and showing the parent or guardian's name and street address: a recent electric, water, or gas bill, a lease, an earnest money or purchase contract, or a letter from a mortgage company. Expired or disconnected utility bills are not accepted.
  • Official birth certificate. A passport can be used at registration, but the official birth certificate must be submitted within 30 days of enrollment.
  • Government-issued identification for the parent or guardian completing registration.
  • Proof of immunizations, legible and in English.
  • Report card or transcript from the most recently attended school.
  • Social Security card, only if you choose to enter the student's Social Security number.

Step three: register online

New student registration runs through PowerSchool Enrollment at katyisd.org/registration. You create an account with an email or cell phone, which lets you save your work and come back to it. You upload the documents during the online flow, and the zoned campus registrar is the person to contact with questions about a specific file. Families who move mid-year use the same system.

What new families get wrong

  • Waiting on the address lookup. Do the SARA search before you make an offer, not after you close. The assignment for this school year is what matters, and the district reviews boundaries annually.
  • Assuming the neighborhood name is the answer. "Cinco Ranch" is not a school zone. The assignment follows the address, and last year's answer may not be this year's.
  • Missing the 30-day windows. The residence proof must be current, and a passport-only registration has a 30-day deadline to submit the official birth certificate.

If you are deciding where to buy

School zone is one of the most common questions Carol Jukes hears from Cinco Ranch buyers, and it is one of the easiest to answer early because the district publishes the lookup. The honest version: verify the assignment for the exact address, then verify it again if your timeline crosses a boundary review. The guides below walk through the broader school picture.
